Received My Wii Component Cables Today. What a Difference the Right Cables Make!

Posted: December 3rd, 2006

Update: Amazon has a bunch of options for component cables now, starting at $13 if you’re on a budget.

Note: Order through this link and I get a few bucks. If you like this post, it’s a good way to say thanks.

I have a Panasonic 42″ Plasma TV and while it’s only EDTV (720 x 480 pixels) it sure looks great when viewing HDTV content or DVDs. When I got my Wii at launch they didn’t have any component cables in stock so I was stuck running it with the ghetto yellow composite video cable with an S Video adapter at Standard Definition (360 x 240 pixels I think). The day I brought the Wii home I went online and ordered the cables from Nintendo.com, but they were backordered until the end of November.

My cables showed up today, UPS Express from NOA in Seattle. The wait is over. Honestly, I can’t believe I put up with the crappy composite video signal for so long. The Wii looks great, all the text is legible and the textures are more detailed than ever. Take a look at some pictures for reference. I used a tripod and shot the screen with a digital camera. The pictures don’t really do it justice, but you’ll get the idea.

Mouseover to change image from Composite to Component. Click to bring up each image side by side in full res.

The main screen is crisp and inviting, rather than blurry and dull.

The background is nice and clear.

The colors on this screen really pop now.

I look a bit jaggy, but it’s better than blurry

The detail in the pins is nice and defined. The wood looks newly waxed!

If you haven’t ordered them already, don’t wait any longer, it’s well worth the $30. I’d go with Nintendo’s online store rather than waiting at shop, they’re shipping now and will get them to you real quick. Amazon is the best place to buy them, starting at $13 and in stock.

Update: In case you’re interested in a good “Got my Wii by getting up at the crack of down” story, check out my post with pictures from that cold morning.

[...] Lawrence Ingraham got his component cables, and put together a really nice comparison with screenshots of both composite and component. The five screenshots do a spiffy mouseover image swap so you can sit there in a trance mousing in and out…. blurry, sharp. burry, sharp. ooooh…. [...]

Looks good! I didn’t think it was a big deal using the composite cables but now I’m starting to think about it a little more. It does look far crisper and colorful with the component cables.

Looks nice and another thing to add to the shopping list when the WII if finally launched here in Europe on the 7th/8th

Nice graphics!

Comment by Anonymous 12.04.06 @ 5:32 am

I like how in the 3rd pic the “S” in “Sports” (top right corner) is backwards on the composite pic. Didn’t know composite cables changed the spelling of words on the screen.

Comment by tut 12.04.06 @ 5:57 am

That’s a pretty nice comparison. A lot of people dono’t really care on how the Wii looks like on their screen. For them, it’s all about gameplay ;-)

Comment by Julian 12.04.06 @ 7:02 am

Nice! I’m very much looking forward to hooking up my cables once i get them (they just shipped). I actually tried to see the difference by running one Zelda:OoT disc in my GameCube and another in the Wii.

Comment by wingerz 12.04.06 @ 7:11 am

Hi there. ¿how much time did it take to get the cables? i mean since you place the order and it gets to your door?

Comment by Robrueda 12.04.06 @ 8:09 am

Nice comparison shots! I’m literally going to the Nintendo site right now to order the component cables–I’m sold.

The Wii Channels interface has been a drag for me because I’m used to using the Xbox 360 with component cables, so I’m damn spoiled. In your comparison shots, the Channels look about as crisp and sharp as the Xbox’s Dashboard now. Bravo!

And I don’t mind paying the extra $30 for the component cables, because, let’s face it, the Wii is damn cheap as it is.

Comment by asurroca 12.04.06 @ 8:15 am

Does it ever make a difference.

Comment by Zach 12.04.06 @ 8:20 am

Nice job, I like the rollover pictures, I’ll Digg this. This shows that the cables are definately worth the price.

Comment by daniel 12.04.06 @ 9:45 am

Wow, the quality with composite cables is really really really really bad :P

Comment by nick 12.04.06 @ 10:07 am

Umm, Pete, maybe the stuff changed on the screen because he had to change the cables, and while he did it, stuff moved?
Anyway, it’s nice comparison. I’ll wait until I play it myself until I decide to change cables or not.

Comment by Peksujeffi 12.04.06 @ 10:17 am

OMG LMFAO
I never noticed the “s” in sports was backwards on the 3rd pic in compostite
rofl
this is fake
haha

Comment by chris 12.04.06 @ 10:35 am

in response to Petes FAKE FAKE post, YOU ARE AN IDIOT. they have to restart the system and swap cables to get the component to work. so of course the pictures aren’t going to be the exact same. since the system does the people on the sides in a random order…. GOD some people are so STUPID

Comment by Jason 12.04.06 @ 10:59 am

OK … LOOK AT THE WIISPORT ONE THE S IS BACKWARDS PHOTOSHOPPED … GAY AND LAME

Comment by photoshopped 12.04.06 @ 11:29 am

Wow, quite the difference. I won’t be getting a WII without getting the component cables at the same time.

Thanks for the comparison photos.

Comment by apeman 12.04.06 @ 11:49 am

Why do people get so hyped about the Nintendo component cables, their junk. Psyclone or Monster needs to get their asses in gear and put out some good, insulated, 24K connetor component cables, then you’ll see the difference.

Comment by Steven 12.04.06 @ 12:03 pm

to tut
the letters spin so when he took the second screenshot using the component and composite they were in different positions

and to the guy who said fake

he tried to get similar shots at 2 diff times of play

Comment by djmajin 12.04.06 @ 12:25 pm

To pete who accused it of being a fake due to pictures not being the same, err dumbass obviously its gonna be hard to get the exact same shot for both cable types, think about it… seriously think about your comments first!!!!!

Chris

the reason why it looks so crappy in the first images is because this guys using a plasma TV if he had been using a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) you know that big on everyone wants to get rid of the resolution would have matched or exceeded his after photos using the composite cables, and if you don’t believe me ask any gamer thats taken the time to compare LCD and Plasma to CRT they will tell you that the CRT ran smooth and with the LCD and/or Plasma they experienced ghosting lagging and headaches from the low refresh rates. In my opinion LCD’s and Plasma’s are just a gimmic to get you to buy something thats over priced and low in quality thats certain to break down within 6 months. But no need to worry SED will be out soon and will finally be an upgrade thats slim.(Signal Emitting Cathode Ray Tube Display)full abbreviation SECRTD SED for short.

Could someone advise me. I have Sony Bravia which only has 1 Component, 1 VGA and 1 RGB Scart. I currently have Xbox 360 connected via component. Iv ordered a Wii, what am I best doing? Getting VGA for Xbox and connected Wii via component?

Comment by Jono 12.04.06 @ 1:16 pm

Pete<< No, it\’s not fake. You can see every image has something different on them. If it were faked, I\’d make the composite ones look much crappier to get my point across. =)

Jared<< I had a CRT 34\” HDTV in the past and yeah, it\’s much nicer. Only problem is, took up half of my living room (not literally but it\’s large).

Robrueda<< I ordered them the day I got the console and they started shipping on the 28th I think. Took a couple days.

And yes, Zelda looks amazing as well.

Comment by Law 12.04.06 @ 1:28 pm

NICE! Thanks for comparison photos Mr. Ingram. I can’t wait to get mine. A-town represent!

Comment by ZackRabbit 12.04.06 @ 3:53 pm

To Jono, you really have two decent options there. You could connect your X360 through VGA which has several other advantages including the ability to upconvert DVD video to the full resolution of your TV. Then you’d use component video with the Wii.

However, if you decided to get a PS3 or some other device that might need component given the inputs on your TV, you could instead get a component video switcher. There are several on the market with the Pelican switcher being one of the cheaper ones (and I don’t think it auto-switches or has remote control access) and the Audio Authority 1154 being one of the more complete ones. I have the latter and use it to connect four devices to one component input (HTPC, X360, PS2, and now Wii), and it also switches digital audio including converting digital coax to digital optical or vice versa. It also auto-switches based on which device is on and the priority of the devices relative to one another. At $150 it’s a great investment for anyone who has limited component inputs and lots of component output devices.

Hope this helps!

Lol @ the morons that think Monster cables are actually better. They only thing that will bet different with a monster cable is your wallet will be lighter.

I have been using the component cables for a couple weeks now. My TV is a Toshiba 27″ widescreen CRT that upscans everything to 1080i. While the difference wasn’t dramatic, I find myself constantly feeling like I can see more and that things are clearer. For this reason alone, I highly recomend the component cables to anyone who has any type of EDTV or better.

Hi Scott

Thanks for the advice, really appreciate it. My Wii is getting delivered tomorrow!!! Can’t Wait!

Comment by Jono 12.07.06 @ 3:00 pm

very nice review. i was just doing some google research because I got mine today and didnt notice a difference. After reading your article I was wondering “how the hell is there that much of an improvement” because I wasnt seeing anything. Then I realized that I had it set at 480i and not 480p HD and HOLY CRAP! It looks soooo much better. I am very pleased with my 30 dollar investment. Definitely worth every penny.

Comment by Don K 12.14.06 @ 5:13 pm

I noticed right away how much better it looked. Once I made that change, I went back to the main screen and noticed that each of the empty boxes was like the white noise fuzzy television…something I didnt notice before.
Now lets bring on that internet browser nintendo!

Comment by Don K 12.14.06 @ 5:15 pm

I think that it was a smart idea to do the comparisons, but what makes it so sad is that people sometimes apretiate the graphics more than the game itself. People need to stop complaning about graphics and start enjoying the game. That is why I am a fan of nintendo becuase they focus more on the gameplay than all of these pretty little visual effects. Visual effects are nice to look at but what if the game sucks then that just ruins all of the enjoyment of playing that videogame. All Nintendo wants to do is just create new ideas for a new console, I have a Wii and I appreciate it for the enjoyment I get out of it everyday.

Comment by bUM + 12.29.06 @ 2:57 am

those are not fake you jerks.
the owner could not get the exact same screen shot with different cables. First you have to switch the cables, at this point, it will be at a different part in the game. anyone with eyes can tell the difference in clarity, even if the person “on the right” isn’t there. How exactly do you expect him to get the exact same screen shot. The S is backwards in the other shot because the letters in the actual game SPIN AROUND!!! you guys who are saying it is fake, obviously don’t have a wii (or maybe your 10). And why would this guy fake the pictures? Does he work for nintendo? No. Does he work for a component cable supplier? No. You are not being gulible by believing this man. It is the truth. Alot of times when playing Zelda, I could barely understand what the text was saying(with composites). I’ve seen comparisons on more web pages than this one. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!!! Just believe it for christ’s sake. I might actually buy these cables, I guess I’m just saying I want the most out of my wii.

Comment by ben 12.29.06 @ 11:27 pm

You people don’t know what the hell your talking about you need to play the wii and you will relize that on wii sports that the s spins when your in the screen mode where you pick what hand your are get a wii frist the comment this is kind of thing that happens when you have your head up your ass and LCD’s rule

Comment by chris 01.04.07 @ 3:26 am

I totally agree, the composite cables that came with are CRAP! That’s probably why I bought the Wii for $300 and not $350.

Comment by Steve 04.22.09 @ 10:59 am

Do you know the link for your seller? I live in Seattle and maybe I can stop by and pick up the cables. I have been trying to connect several pieces and I am tired of waiting for shipping. Thanks
